what happened on the club ride 9/1/2011

Well what happened on the 2nd club ride of the year?

I left my house at 8.40 to join the Bird Hills club ride as normal,  but was greeted by a thick white frost on Birdwood Road.  From experience heavily frosted roads are normally ok for cycling but care is required.  Farm Road was equally as bad, but about half way down Highway Avenue I wasn't sure about black ice caused by cars compressing the frost.  My fear was confirmed by a fiesta pulling out of Kenwood Close and managing to slide and skid down the road.  So I gave up and went home.  Shortly after getting home Danuta called to see if I had got to the golf club as she tried riding out of her road in Cookham Dean and gave up, but was considering driving to the golf club.

About 10.30 I went out again with Birdwood Road still heavily frosted, but Farm Road and Highway Avenue appearing ok.  To avoid problems and now with limited time due to family commitments I decided to ride along the A4 to Reading.  All went well as I crossed the A404 / A4 junction.  In the distance just before the Shire Horse pub I could see something in the road and a person waving their arms about like a windmill.  Coming to a safe stop without running down the person in the road, the person had just stopped on the A4 as the car directly in front had managed to spin on black ice and land up facing the wrong way.  After a short discussion to check everything was under control I cautiously turned and went home.  Pushing my bike across the road the bike slipped away from me, so things were bad.

I got home safely and did about 75mins on the turbo instead before going out for lunch.

Did anyone make it to the golf club?
