Clock Tower Run - Easter 31st March 2013 - Olympians and Samaritans
Four of us Dan, Gurpal, John and I negotiated the many rail replacement buses in the Station Car Park to meet up this morning. Gurpal suggested a special magical mystery tour following the route of the Olympic Road Race (no, not a trip from Central London to Box Hill and back, but the route from 1948 which went round through Windsor Great Park 17 times).
So we headed out that way to one of the gates to start the circuit. Of course the Olympians probably didn't have to cope with the various Easter Sunday activities taking place in the Park: a Horse Show with many horses and carts, dog walkers, young cyclists and scooter riders and an Easter Egg Hunt. Our circuit was a lot slower than the riders of 1948, but 4 started and 4 finished. However it wasn't the same 4! as Dan accidentally decided to take a hillier route and we acquired Rob who admitted that he had just set off having forgotten about the time change after a late night.
So there were 5 of us who did a longer circuit including going to find this hill that Dan had climbed. Not long after we came across a lady running with her bike. We discovered that she was training for a London - Paris charity ride in the summer but her training had not yet got as far as the bit that says 'Always carry a spare tube or puncture repair kit on a ride'. So we decided to be good Samaritans and help her out. Well when I say 'we' I mean Dan supplied a spare tube and we all watched Gurpal do the repair. Having got a bit cold during the stop we then headed home. 38 miles in 3hr 15min at an average speed of 14.6mph, it felt tough for me still feeling the effects of Friday's 10 mile run, but somehow I've got to manage 300km next weekend.
