A Club '25' 50 years ago. News from the Archive

A couple of weeks ago one of our Vice-Presidents, John Parfitt and his wife Anne, now living near Chippenham after 30 years living in Holland, called in to see me for lunch and an opportunity to catch up on all our news. John you may remember has been a continuous member of the club since 1960.

He brought with him one or two photos for me to copy for the Club archive, one of which I copy below as it was taken about 50 years ago and shows how snappily cyclists used to dress in those days. None of that horrible lycra and advertising, just plain sensible wool jumpers and green spot jackets.

We can't remember all the riders names I'm afraid and if the two missing names see this and would like to contact the club to fill in the missing details it would be appreciated.

Here are the names of those in the photograph...back row, l. to r.

DEN HAWKINS, UNKNOWN, BILL RUNDLE, NIGEL CORY, KEITH PERRY, JOHN PARFITT

STEVE PITTS, ALAN BANNISTER, PIP PALMER, UNKNOWN

The photo was taken at Fifield near the cricket field where the '25' used to start and probably after a '25' has been ridden as Den Hawkins (Maidenhead Cycling and Athletic Club Gen Sec) is there and he usually timed and also marshalled the event on his motorbike.

Much could be said about some of the members shown but why I show it is because 5 of the members shown still play a part in Club life today through the trophies they donated.

John's family of course gave the Sportive Trophy to the club 3 years ago to mark his 50 years of membership. Bill gave the tankard for the Evening '10' handicap series that is still hotly contested. Keith, son of Jack Perry ( Jack was President for many years and first joined the club in December 1929) donated the '25' Trophy. Alan gave the '100' Trophy, a distance that he excelled at and lastly Den Hawkins gave a tankard for the fastest juvenile '10'
